Pennie Open Enrollment Starts November 1st
Open enrollment for Marketplace health insurance starts November 1, 2022 and will end January 15, 2023. During this time period, Pennsylvanians can sign up for health insurance coverge on Pennie, Pennsylvania's Health and Dental Insurance Marketplace. Pennie offers a choice of health plans to purchase. The Marketplace was developed because of the Affordable Care Act. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) oversees Pennsylvania’s Marketplace and, along with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, approves the health insurance plans that are sold. Premium assistance and subsidies are available to reduce the cost of coverage for low income households. To learn more about financial assistance available through Pennie, click here.
If you need coverage that starts January 1st, you must enroll in a Pennie plan by December 15th. If you enroll after December 15th but before the January 15th deadline, your new health coverage will start on February 1st.
If you miss Pennie’s Open Enrollment period, you may still be able to enroll in a plan on the Pennie marketplace if you have a Qualifying Life Event (QLE), such as losing other health insurance coverage, moving, marriage or divorce, release from incarceration, having a baby, or adopting a child. Any one of these QLEs can give you a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which will allow you to enroll in coverage outside of the Open Enrollment period. In general, you have 60 days from the QLE to enroll in coverage. In addition, you may also be eligible to apply for coverage outside of the Open Enrollment period if your income is at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Limit. To learn more about this SEP for people with low income, read our February 2022 newsletter article here.
